ClO4 oxidation number?

Break it down. You take perchloric acid, which is HClO4. The H is 1. Therefore ClO4 is -1.

Oxygen is -2, so therefore the chlorine must be 7. And sure enough, chlorine is in group VIIA, so a 7 oxidation number is not out of the question.
